  1. What it does (‘cos my father’s office used to have a slightly newer one of these) are the same things that a digital calculator did, but it had to do them by spinning gears and wheels instead of running electrons through a few transistors.

    And it made a clearing-its-throat kind of noise every time you hit Plus or Minus, and if you did the wrong thing you could send it into a divide-by-zero state, and it’d spin for-seemingly-ever with you hitting every key you could think of to get the damn thing to STOP IT!
