Association of American Railroads — 1960

“Will atomic energy power tomorrow’s railroads? Some day you may see a train like this — powered by the energy locked up in the atom. Possibly the locomotive will have its own nuclear reactor. Or perhaps it will use electricity generated at atomic power stations.”

That was 1960. Here in 2013, a mere 53 years later, it may finally happen, as Britain swears it will actually deliver on this theoretical promise, according to this story at Smartplanet.com.

Also, THIS is a wonderful collection from io9 of prototypes for atomic-powered transportation, from trains and planes and dirigibles, all the way down to the family sedan.
